Only One 35L backpack for six months: How to make it possible?

.

I started to travel 14 months ago from Perth in Australia. Along my way, I’m always trying to push myself until I find what fulfills me with happiness. All these challenges gave me the opportunity to get closer to my personality and my inner voice. My instinct, sense of perception and energy provided me the keys to enter in a new travel dimension. I don’t have to plan something anymore: I can adapt myself instantly to any situation.

In consequence, time and weather doesn’t affect me and can’t stress me. Money has lost a lot of its value (that doesn’t mean this one is useless ^^) and I’m discovering things many times better:  meeting new local or foreign people, sharing our stories, helping each other depending our skills and/or equipment. My heart always leads me to the people I must meet and with them I learn and build my future for the next day, week, month or year. This epic lifestyle is possible thanks to who I became.

First with 23 kg and two backpacks, now I’m traveling with only 12kg in a 35L backpack (2.5 litres water pocket, food for lunch and my digital equipment included) for the next six months. I have left all the things I didn’t need in Jindabyne where I will come back beginning of June.

Here is all the equipment I carry and how this one is organized in the best backpack I ever had:

Packing and Travel tips:

..

packing_travel-tips_keep-bag-tidy_worldtour-outdoorexperienceAlways optimize the way you organize your stuff to reduce “dead space”. For instance, you can add in your spare shoes your socks and underwear: one shoe for the clean ones, the other for the dirty ones.

In the least accessible pocket, put everything you need less than one time a day.
Moreover you can use a case to keep your bag tidy. In this one I pack my shavers, bandages, battery charger, spare parts, needles, sewing thread, …

In the easiest pockets to reach, put everything you need more than 3 times a day.
It is where I have my cameras, mobile phone, tripod, sunscreen and sunglasses

It’s always better to carry your rain cover, wind stopper and security equipment (for visibility) in  an outside pocket. Indeed, you don’t have to open your bag and gets your stuff wet or blown away. You can also protect yourself much faster.

In the pockets you can access by hands without removing your bag, put some money
(in the straps for example) and muesli bars or energetic food.

Why is it better to travel with Only One bag?

  • Energy saver
  • You are lighter so you will go faster and longer
  • Smaller wind resistance
  • It is safer: You take less space on the road than with a bike trailer
  • You can cross a river, be more adventurous and jump over every obstacle (impossible with a trailer)
  • You can book everything for cheaper (boats, planes)
  • It is easier to hitch-hike (if you want or if you are in difficulty/troubles)
  • It is faster to get ready to leave (less equipment, less time to pack it)
  • You can quickly escape a weird or dangerous situation
  • You bring less attention on you so you reduce the chance to be stolen
  • You don’t loose anything because you use everything!
